OBITUARY
Lawrence was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY to Russian immigrants who came through Ellis Island with nothing to seek a better life. Lawrence was the youngest of 3 children and the first and only family member to attend college. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He joined the Army as a paratrooper in 1953 then attended Chicago Medical School. During his medical residency, he met the love of his life, Barbara, and they married in 1960 for over 57 years. They had 3 children and settled in a beautiful home in Northbrook, Il.
Lawrence “Dr. Metrick” quickly became the top Orthopedic Surgeon in Northbrook, and eventually expanded offices to Deerfield and Long Grove. He loved his patients, and they loved him as he would answer calls from them throughout the night if needed. His patients would often wait hours in the office to see him, as he worked 14-hour days and often past midnight until he saw every last one.
Family dinner outings always included patients greeting Dr. Metrick as everyone knew him on the north shore. Lawrence was a founding member of Beth Shalom in Northbrook where he remained a member throughout his life. Larry and Barbara loved taking the family on winter vacations to Hawaii. Each spring, he spent time gardening in the backyard adding hundreds of beautiful flowers for everyone to enjoy during many memorable summer BBQ pool parties with family and friends. He was proud of his children and grandchildren and spoke of them with pure joy. Everyone who knew Larry loved him, his warm personality, kindness and wonderful sense of humor. This immeasurable loss can never be matched.
